Recent research suggests genipin may be a treatment for the dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP) in horses.
Genipin is made from an extract of the tropical plant, Gardenia jasminoides, and injected into the soft palate which seemed to reduced vibration and flaccidity, increase strength when compared with palates that had not been treated.
Gardenia jasminoides ----The whole plant is antispasmodic, antiperiodic, cathartic, anthelmintic and external-antiseptic. It having antispasmodic properties may be the key to this treatment of DDSP? One may want to substitute this exotic plant extract for antispasmodic plants found in the USA. For instance, Apium and commonly known as the celery, carrot or parsley family, or simply as umbellifers. There are many other possibilities.
