In 1993, while working on a research project involving thiols, chemist Paul Krebaum, of Lisle, Illinois formulated a compound that could change thiols into other chemicals. He discovered that by making oxygen molecules bond with the thiols (skunk spray), the smelly substances were chemically altered into odor-free neutral substances. His formula was incredibly simple, containing only hydrogen peroxide, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and liquid soap.
Here is the actual "recipe" along with instructions for making and using it:
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide,
1/4 cup baking soda, 1 teaspoon liquid soap
(Dawn is recommended buy any dish soap will work)
Mix in a bucket or bowl; it will be fizzy (DO NOT try to mix it and store it in a bottle or other closed contained as it WILL EXPLODE to bottle). Thoroughly wet your dog with the solution and knead it well into the coat to chemically alter the thiols on the hair. Be careful not to get it in the eyes, nose or
mouth. Use a sponge to carefully wipe onto the face. Follow this bath with THOROUGH rinsing.
