Does anyone use a breast collar when they train or race their horse? I need to try something because my poor guy has a terrible girth burn due to the saddle slipping back when training. I have used rundown patches to pad the area, as well as a fleece girth cover, even rags (which work the best). When initially saddled, the girth is well in front of the irritated area, but after galloping, the girth (where the leather and the elastic meet) have rubbed a big 'strawberry' which gets worse with each riding. If anyone has used a breast collar for training, have you found them to really work? I need to do something for this big guy. In racing, I tend to see the Europeans use them quite a bit. Any opinions?
My answer:
Yes, I have used them occasionally and one may be what you are looking for.
Worth a try! I have never had any problems with them.
You may also want to experiment with what the standardbred people call a
Buxton martingale. I like its configuration for keeping the saddle in
place. The only problem is that they are made with end snaps that snap into
D-rings commonly found on harness and not necessary an exercise saddle. You
just need to take the snaps off and replace them with loops so they will
fasten onto an exercise saddle.
