I received this in my email that originated from Bill Hirsch, Max's grandson:

THE OLD TRAINING METHODS

Training charts for 1946 Triple Crown winner Assault, who was conditioned by my Grandfather / Racing Hall of Famer Max Hirsch, are very interesting. Assault, a Texas-bred, basically breezed every 3 days, though he occasionally was wheeled right back and breezed 2 days in a row. Assault breezed 10 to 12 times each month. He ran an average of 2 races per month, though he did occasionally race 3 times in one month.

This arduous training schedule of 2 or 3 breezes a week ensured that assault received sufficient race-specific conditioning, so that his body remodeled itself to withstand the pressures of racing. His morning training routine ensured that Assault would develop race-specific bone, ligament, tendon, heart and lung densities. Plus his frequent breezes developed his ability to recover from a race in a few days and he was ready to race right back the next week, if necessary. Assault spent the winter of 1946 in winter quarters at the Columbia Training Center in Columbia, SC. Assault’s KY Derby winning margin of 8 lengths still stands as the longest winning margin in Derby history.

Please note that in 1946 there was only 1 week between the KY Derby and the Preakness Stakes.

AWESOME TOTAL (NOT A MISREAD!):
Assault’s distance traveled in official Workouts (4 miles & 3 furlongs) AND
Races ( 2 miles & 6 ½ furlongs) for month of April: 7 miles & 3/16ths

Assault’s distance traveled in official Workouts (7 miles & 7 furlongs) AND

And on the 3rd day after this 2-month grueling morning regime, Assault wins the Triple Crown.
